| “I’m sorry, Gideon. I didn’t mean to get upset with you. Of course my problems weren’t your fault. Actually, they were nobody’s fault. I guess I’m still a bit touchy about some of these past events.” “Don’t worry about it, John,” Gideon replied. “Sometime or another we all must face our dragons and slay them, lest they torture us for the rest of our lives.” Marla spoke up, “John, I know that you have many questions for me. I’ll give you answers to some of them, even before this evening is done. But others? Well, I must warn you that I don’t have all the answers.” I was about to reply when Gideon motioned to my glass of wine. “It’s good wine. They bring it in every week from the Aurorian Universal Winery . . . somewhere in some remote sector of the galaxy. Try it.” I reached out and picked up the glass. Slowly I raised it to my lips and sipped. I looked at him and nodded. All the while Marla was observing me with amusement in her eyes. I smiled and drank the rest of it. “Tastes like the proverbial nectar of the gods,” I commented. “Actually, it is,” she said. The lights dimmed for a moment and Gideon said, “The floor show is about to begin. We’ll eat while it’s going on.” For the first time I took a good look around the restaurant. It was elegantly decorated. The remarkable thing, however, was its size. Although it seemed as if there were thousands of customers,the hustle and bustle normally present in large restaurants was missing. Everything was flowing so smoothly. In the very center of the room was a large stage that appeared to be simply floating. Inattention on my part or just an optical illusion, I guessed.
