Marla jumped in and said, “Life is for entertainment, John, and yet there are problems . . . challenges, if you will. No problems, no growth. No growth, no joy and excitement. No joy and excitement, and one dies of boredom. Better to die of anything than boredom. Then again, one cannot die, but that’s another story.”

Theophilus, who was sitting quietly all this time, finally spoke. “Gideon, perhaps you or Marla should accompany him this first time. Maybe he would be much more comfortable with someone who knows the system.”

“Good idea,” said Gideon. “Marla, I’ll stay and find out what Theo has been up to recently. Why don’t you go with John?”

“It would be a delight. Would you like that, John?” “I’m really not sure what all this means, but I’d love to have you along, Marla,” I answered.

Never had I tasted food so delicious. There, in the Restaurant at the Edge of Eternity, I sat with my strange friends enjoying a remarkable meal. It wasn’t too long before Marla reached over and whispered, “Whenever you’re ready,John. The way it works is simplicity itself. Just think of a place and a time you would like to visit, and when you have the picture clearly in your mind, just press the green button.”

“Does it have to be a place I’ve visited before?”

“No, no. That would be very ordinary; although you could do that, too, if you wanted — just anyplace and anytime. Use your imagination. Close your eyes, if you like. Doesn’t matter.”

“Just close my eyes and imagine? That’s all?”

“When you use your imagination,” Gideon replied, “you are using one of the most powerful tools ever given to you by the Creator. Whatever you can imagine, already exists. This mechanism only assists you to find it. Understand that you don’t need a machine or tools to do these things. You’re perfectly capable of doing anything the machine does. But since you don’t quite know how yet, use the tools.”

“OK, Gideon. Let me think of a place and a time. I’ll give it a try.”

With that I closed my eyes and, at the same time, made sure that my finger was resting lightly on the green button. I didn’t want any mistakes. Marla’s hand felt comforting on mine as I took a deep breath and let my mind wander.
