“I’m sorry, Gideon,” I said rather contritely. “I certainly don’t want you to think I’m picking on him. I just wanted some answers.”

“The problem isn’t with the answers,” he said. “Answers, you’ve got. It’s the questions you haven’t figured yet.” He turned to Marla and continued, “Marla, it’s getting late for John and Pandayji. They’ve had an exciting day. Perhaps they should get some rest soon.”

“That’s a good idea,”said Marla. “Enough is enough for one day.”

By this time, the restaurant was quite empty and quiet. You never would have guessed that just a short while before, the Terror of Trivandrum stood right here before us. That, perhaps, is the stuff that legends are made of. We left our seats as Pandayji said to Gideon and Marla, “I am grateful to John for finally making it possible to meet the two of you. Thank you so much for dinner. Perhaps, we shall meet again one day.”

“Perhaps,” replied Gideon. “And keep close to the Holy Ones. They will always guide you in the true way.” He pointed to me as he continued.“John here is still wondering what the greatest secret in the universe is while, all the time, it’s right under his nose. Next time I see him,I’ll share it with him.” Gideon shook his head and then as an after thought, added,“as if he doesn’t already know it.”

“He always speaks in riddles, Pandayji,” I said as Marla and Gideon waved goodnight saying they would see me again soon. I said good-bye to Pandayji, promising to meet him for breakfast. In a short while I was back in my room preparing for bed. It had been an extremely interesting evening, and with thoughts of the Terror of Trivandrum, I fell asleep.

During the next few days I wrapped up my work with the ever-present help of Pandayji. He accompanied me to the airport and it wasn’t long before it was time to board my plane. I hadn’t seen Gideon and Marla since dinner that evening. But that was their way with me, popping in and out of my life and never staying long enough for me to get completely used to their presence.

It was sad saying good-bye to my dear friend Pandayji. We promised to keep in touch more regularly. The speaker blared that my flight was ready for boarding. “Take good care of yourself, Pandayji,” I said, “I’ll be seeing you again, soon.” In a few moments, I was walking down the ramp into the belly of the big metal bird that would soon be flying me back home. My trip to the former Jewel in the Crown had come to an end.
