| “Isn’t there anything you can do?” I asked. “Oh, sure. But I’ve got to be careful. Lots of rules about interference, free will, choices and the like. Much as I’d rather hang the step father by his toes from the tallest steeple, my job is really to strengthen, comfort and teach Christine. I also want to assure her that the situation is temporary.” “How did you hear about her, Matthias?” “She prayed. She prayed so fervently and honestly that the response was instantaneous. We monitor all sincere requests. Help is available immediately for those who know how to pray.” “Are you her Guardian Angel?” “No, I’m not. Her Guardian Angel asked for my expertise; that’ show I ended up with this assignment.Sometimes a Guardian Angel acts as a general manager and calls in experts from various areas. I’ll be through with this case in a short while and, if conditions permit, I’ll drop by and visit with you and Gideon on my way back.” “What are you going to do for Christine, Matthias?” I asked, fascinated that he was an angel. “We’re making arrangements to get her away from her stepfather. We are also in the process of helping her mother develop more confidence and find a better job. This will take a little time so, I’m giving Christine a gift, which will assist her whenever the stepfather becomes overly abusive. Here, want to see?” He opened his brief- case and pulled out a small pouch. He handed it to me and said, “It’s a small gift. A stone. She will believe that it has magical powers and, because beliefs can be so powerful, she will be protected from her stepfather — at least to a certain extent. Take a look at the stone.” For some strange reason the pouch seemed familiar. I opened it and removed a small, grayish stone that felt cool to the touch. My mind jumped across the years as I remembered the day an old man had given me a similar pouch with a stone called the Jahar-Mora.
