| My office is a haven where I go to concentrate while preparing for lectures, returning phone calls, answering mail from all around the world and taking care of the necessary administration of my business. My desk is the large one at the back of the room. Paintings of ships on two walls, a little shelf of angel figurines, books, clutter, all create a working environment, which harmonizes with my personality. Computers, laser printers, scanners, copying and fax machines are lined up in one area of the office. There are a few older chairs and, of course, the insurmountable pile of paper in the corner. However, I hardly write my books here, much preferring to sit at the kitchen table. Today, as I went into the office,I heard the sound from behind my desk . . . as if someone were sitting in my chair. It creaks sometimes, you see, a sound entirely unique unto itself. After the voice in the kitchen, I guess I was slightly jumpy. I quickly glanced in the direction of my desk as the grinning face of Gideon spun around in my chair, as cheerful as can be. “Good morning,” he said as he moved to a nearby guest chair. “Who did you think was talking to you in the kitchen, anyway?” Somewhat relieved to discover it was Gideon, I sat down and mentally started to quiz him about how he got into my office without a key, when I thought better of it. He habitually appeared unexpectedly and, yet, throughout the many years I’ve known him, he never intruded on my privacy. He always seemed considerate of others and would never take advantage of anyone’s kindness. “So you were the disembodied voice, huh?” I muttered. “As you can clearly see, I’ve got a body just like you do. I just use my mind a little more effectively. Span the universe and all that.” He winked at me as he spoke. “By the way, Gideon, what are you doing here so early in the morning? Of course, I’m always happy to see you, but just curious.” |
